How a pneumococcal vaccination can help you stay healthier

As we age, our immune system becomes weaker and less effective at fighting off infections. One such infection that can be particularly dangerous for older adults is pneumococcal disease. The pneumococcal vaccine, also known as the pneumonia vaccine, is a safe and effective way to prevent this disease.

Pneumococcal vaccines protect against the Streptococcus pneumonia bacteria. This bacterium can cause severe illnesses such as pneumonia, meningitis, and septicaemia. The pneumococcal vaccination is recommended for all adults aged 55 years or older, to lower your risk of developing these infections, or to reduce the severity of the infection should you still contract it.

Speak to your doctor to find out if the vaccine is recommended for you, based on your age, medical history and specific risk factors. If yes, please consider getting vaccinated.

How we fund your pneumococcal vaccination

Anglo Medical Scheme will pay for the cost of one vaccine and consultation per beneficiary on the Standard Care Plan and on the Managed Care Plan in full per lifetime. This will be paid from Risk (not from your Medical Savings Account or day-to-day benefits) for beneficiaries over the age of 55, when the vaccine is prescribed and administered by a registered nurse, general practitioner or specialist.

Where to get your vaccine?

Contact your GP to find out if they offer vaccines or visit a Scheme preferred pharmacy near you to get your pneumococcal vaccine at the Scheme Reimbursement Rate.
